Brianna Sylver discussing the differences between market research and user research

The Aurelius podcast is a show that brings you insights, thoughts and tactics from leading UX designers, product leaders and user researchers from across multiple industries and companies. Hosted by Zack Naylor, the show is brought to you byAurelius — the best user research and insights tool for design and product teams. You can subscribe on iTunes, SoundCloud, Stitcher.

Our guest for this tims is Brianna Sylver. She’s the founder and CEO of Sylver Consulting an international research and strategy firm in Chicago. Brianna has a bit of a duel background in that she has both UX and market research experience. She started in UX design and user research and by chance found herself in situations where she was doing market research later. As she likes to put it she “spends her time with one foot in each world” today.

We had an informative chat where she broke down some common misconceptions about what market research is and the differences between market research and user research or design research.

Brianna also shared some personal stories of project successes and failures she’s had in presenting new innovative ideas (often based on that research) and things you can take away from her experiences.

Brianna and I spoke at length about the importance of doing research. Whether you’re a market researcher, a design researcher or some hybrid like her, we all know it’s vital to truly understand the people we are making things for. We built our very own tool, Aurelius, to help anyone doing customer research and collecting feedback. Aurelius helps you tag, group, organize and search every research note and key insight in one place so you can make awesome products and features. We’d love to hear what you think.
